Hello,

I have several workstations that have scheduled restarts once a week. Is it possible to disable the pre-boot encryption password during this time so that the computers restart back into Windows?

Thanks,

Michael

It can be accessed on any computer where VeraCrypt is installed. Doesn't have to be the one where it's originally encrypted.

You can access a VeraCrypt encrypted hard drive on any computer where VeraCrypt is installed. Doesn't have to be the original one.

Yes is there any way you guys could make a possible update to have the password come on not only for the boot up but for when you put the computer to sleep? it would be greatly appreciated much.

I'm not sure what exactly is going on but my Veracrypt volumes have now mounted two separate times after booting my machine without me entering any password. I am using this script to mount the volumes:
VeraCrypt.exe /cache /auto favorites /wipecache /quit

I am not using a system encryption and both times it was a cold boot, not a reboot or wake up from standby.

Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? Is this normal behaviour?
Comments: So, for other people that have that problem: This is due to the "Hybrid boot and shutdown" function of Windows which is basically another version of "hibernate". Disable that and you're good.

When I dismount a drive, VeraCrypt hangs the taskbar and after five minutes, the task bar unfreezes, and a notification appears, saying that the volume is dismounted.
Comments: I see the same as wmbruckner's last comment - I can dismount without issue from the VeraCrypt app window, but if I dismount from the taskbar context, I get the hanging behavior. For me the explorer hang is about 2-3 minutes. W10 x64 Home. Fully up-to-date. VeraCrypt 1.19.

Comments: Yeah no kidding! You read on Passware Recovery Kit Forensic about how they just need access to a running system to crack your Windows login password instantly which means maybe the lock screen isn't enough? and perhaps now that Veracrypt is updated to 1.19, hopefully the Veracrypt password is thoroughly protected in RAM too.

Commented Unassigned: VeraCrypt 1.19 Vista Installation Workaround [639]

I have been unable to install VeraCrypt 1.19 on a Vista OS unless I use a workaround. The installation always fails with the message "Installation failed". I discovered a work around for the problem. If I un-check the two options "Add VeraCrypt to Start menu" and "Add VeraCrypt icon to desktop" then VeraCrypt will install successfully.

I then create the "VeraCrypt" folder in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" and create any desired shortcuts. The easiest way to get to the folder is to right-click on "All Programs" in the Start Menu and then left-click on "Open All Users". The entire "VeraCrypt" Start Menu folder can be copied from a Windows 7 machine or an older version of VeraCrypt.

Based on this it seems that the error is due to problems creating the Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts. I also determined that un-checking or checking the "Install for all users" option has no effect on the problem. Version 1.16 does not have the problem on the same Vista OS.
Comments: Thank you very much for the answer. I also had this problem.

Dear testslav ,

Okay I understand but , as a standard measure on OpenVpn Servers to create the Key and CA on Air Gaped PC's so that there is no chance of the key to be stolen and make new certificates and e.t.c ...

So I don't know how good strategy will be to keep the key and the lock side by side , and the only thing needed will be someone to just put the two together ,

So I don't know how it should be done Properly , if you have any idea , am all ears , ... but the idea is to keep the keys only in paper form that is " un-hack-able " lastly if this is too difficult we can just make the script to take the newest backup file ( done with robo copy ) , encrypt them , send them though the Tunel , and on the other side I must find a way to verify that all the data are intact , because with out verification it really beats the purpose to transport the data to an other location for this ...

on the other side, i may have a File sever with Encrypted Drives , and that would be it ,

Tell me your ideas about this ....

Thank you in advance

New Post: Linux: Mount encrypted device withOUT sudo

Hi,

all works fine (creating encrypted device, mounting single device manually, mounting favorites as well from GUI as from linux prompt). Good work!

But if I want to mount, VC not only asks for its decryption password but also for admin/sudo password for the mounting itself. Is there any possiblity to mount without sudo privilege? E.g. for other users not having sudo rights. How do I enable them to mount the VC-devices without sudo? (Of course they need to know the VC decryption password, but they should not also need to know the admin password). As stated: Linux, not Windows.

Thanks,
frm

Help wanted - WILL DONATE FAIR AMOUNT
Problem: Encrypted SYSTEM Raid 0 (2 SATA m.2 drives in RAID controller set to RAID 0) drive w VERACRYPT 1.13. Windows problem required decryption. Upon attempt to decrypt w/RESCUE disk and correct password , decryption begins and encounters bad block (on one of M.2 NGFF drives in RAID 0 Array, why/how=?) and program will not, due to read error, proceed further.
How do I handle this and/or perhaps skip or get around bad block to decrypt what's after it?
Re-image M.2 encrupted to blank? Skip bad block somehow and continue after (just need the data that I hope to recover off drive after decryption) if possible? ANy advice. Will make donation and or pay by rate for help.
Response Would BE Greatly Appreciated ::)).

Comments: Dear hierA, I apologize I was away. It is 1 fully encrypted system drive, NTFS, consisting of 2 x 256GB M.2 NGFF drives in RAID 0 Array. Windows would not start. Had crash. Attempted full decryption with rescue disk and shortly after process began it froze, and after hitting escape several times got decryption deferred message. Upon further examination found drive was no longer revognized as single raid volume. One of the M.2 256gb cards had dropped out as member of array. Furtyher insvestigation showed bad block on it. I got them to be recognized as a single array again on another raid controller, and have run some tests on raw encrypted drive, but cannot get it to decrypt. Once it reads the bad block, decryption cannot proceed. Can we force decryption around the bad block. I am only interested in the data in an encrypted container within this encrypted system drive. I wanted to make sure that I properly explained situation. If you think you may still be able to help, please contact me and also we can make payment arrangements. Sincerely iencrypt4me2B

New Post: Need guidance on encrypting a 2nd hard drive

I have a laptop with 2 built-in hard drives.

The 1st hard drive is an SSD where the OS (Windows 8.1) is installed.

The 2nd hard drive is a 1 TB regular hard drive.

Given that the space on the SSD is limited, I was previously using the 2nd hard drive to store both user data (e.g. Documents, Videos, etc) as well as gaming applications, given that the latter often take tens of GB per game.

I've recently replaced the 2nd hard drive recently as the original one failed.

I have been thinking of encrypting the entire 2nd hard drive, but a few concerns have cropped up:
  1. would it be a bad idea to install applications/programs on an encrypted 2nd hard drive? I'm concerned that they may freak out when I boot up Windows and login, given that it takes time to enter in the password to mount the volume. From what I understand, I can't get the 2nd hard drive to be automatically mounted without having to enter a password
  2. would it be a better idea to format the 2nd hard drive as a normal (unencrypted) hard drive, then create a container on the 2nd hard drive just for sensitive user files (e.g. Documents)
  3. assuming the answer to #2 is yes, are there any size / performance issues with having a large container file (e.g. 20 GB)?
  4. if the answer to #2 is no and you recommend I got ahead and encrypt the entire 2nd hard drive, how do you defragment it? I played around and Windows doesn't recognize a VeraCrypt volume
Please note that my version of Windows 8.1 doesn't support BitLocker and I can't upgrade it now, so that's not an option. Also, the 2nd hard drive does have built-in encryption (HGST Bulk Data Encryption) but that requires BIOS support for ATA that I don't have. So I'm looking for a VeraCrypt-based solution.

Thanks for any help.

Regarding this:

From what I understand, I can't get the 2nd hard drive to be automatically mounted without having to enter a password
I went ahead and tried installing applications/programs on the encrypted 2nd hard drive.

What happens after login is that some programs detect the volume isn't there (because it hasn't been mounted yet) and they either reset the location of folders to the default configuration (e.g. this happened with GeForce Experience and the location of recording video files) or they prompt me for the location of their files. Note that I did specify to have the encrypted hard drive mounted at login but the problem is that mounting after login takes some time, given that I have to enter the password and wait while the drive is unencrypted.

So it looks like the answer to #1 is that it is a bad idea.

I'm still looking for feedback for questions #2 and #3.

I'm going to try #2 above, i.e. trying to use the 2nd hard drive as a normal hard drive and then create a VeraCrypt container on it.
