New Post: Wording of the error message used when entering an incorrect password?

Hello,

The error message provided by VeraCrypt clearly states that "Operation failed due to one or more of the following:". The attacker has no idea which one or a combination of the items in the error message that they failed to enter correctly or that they are attacking a VeraCrypt volume.

For example, I got the same error message you posted when I attempt to mount a JPG file that is not a VeraCrypt volume.

The "Source: MountVolume:6948" is to assist the developer in order to troubleshoot issues when people report a problem so he can focus on the location in the code.

Kind Regards.

Hello Mounir,

Thank you for creating the Warrant Canary. Will the Warrant Canary be provided on the mirror sites like SourceForge and GitHub?

Kind Regards.

I was able to reproduce your issue and I found it was caused by the fact that the permissions of the shared files only allow the current Ubuntu user, not even root. But VeraCrypt launched the mount process as root to be able to create mount points and that's why it can't access the file.
Is it possible to launch the mount process as root and the IO process for file access (on network drives) with user privileges?

Best regards,
Ettore

Hi,

I've created a VeraCrypt container on my network device via SMB on Windows 7. Then, I tried to open this container with VeraCrypt on Ubuntu, but the following error message appears after entering my user password:

```
No permission:
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=nas,share=nas/file
VeraCrypt::File::Open:232
```

The permissions on my network device are okay.

Best regards,
Ettore

Hi idrassi,

Thank you for your fast and informative response.

I apologize for not seeing the Warrant Canary link that is indeed posted on the VeraCrypt home page. That would have made my whole question unnecessary.

I have noticed in the past that you are very, very active in the forums. My point of saying that is that based on what you said about quitting development of VeraCrypt rather than intentionally compromising it, I assume it's safe to say that if development stopped and you disappeared from the forums, that VeraCrypt was no longer safe to use.

I don't know anything about the laws in France concerning such issues but sometimes when certain warrants are issued in the U.S. (and I guess other countries), the person is ordered to not reveal that fact, thus the need for a Warrant Canary at all. From what you mentioned it sounds like in France you can say "I've been ordered to insert a backdoor into VeraCrypt. I'm not doing it. Farewell to all, and to all a good day."

My own mother was questioned years ago by 2 members of the FBI concerning whether she knew the whereabouts of a certain person (she did not) and she was told that if she revealed that she had even been questioned about the matter, she could be jailed. Obviously that didn't scare her because she told me. lol

I only mention that story to show how oppressive our "free" country can be. That must have been 25 years ago and it's much worse now. It's only a matter of time before the use of a Warrant Canary will be made illegal here. You will be forced to maintain the Canary.

Regarding your desire to provide something useful to the community, you have done that in superior fashion, sir.

I thank you again for your answer. Best wishes.

What does VeraCrypt bring to you?

VeraCrypt adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks.
VeraCrypt also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt. The following post describes some of the enhancements and corrections done:https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/discussions/569777#PostContent_1313325

As an example, when the system partition is encrypted, TrueCrypt uses PBKDF2-RIPEMD160 with 1000 iterations whereas in VeraCrypt we use327661. And for standard containers and other partitions, TrueCrypt uses at most 2000 iterations but VeraCrypt uses655331 for RIPEMD160 and 500000 iterations for SHA-2 and Whirlpool.

This enhanced security adds some delay only to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data.

Starting from version 1.12, it is possible to use custom iterations through the PIM feature, which can be used to increase the encryption security.

Starting from version 1.0f, VeraCrypt can load TrueCrypt volume. It also offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format.

UPDATE October 7th 2015 : VeraCrypt 1.16 has been released. It brings a more stable fix for the TrueCrypt vulnerabilities and it solves two other issues on Windows. Please check the release notes for the complete list of changes. Download for Windows is here.

UPDATE September 26th 2015 :VeraCrypt 1.15 has been released. It fixes two vulnerabilities discovered in TrueCrypt on Windows, one of them is critical. It also fixes a couple of bugs.

UPDATE September 16th 2015 :VeraCrypt 1.14 has been released. It adds the possibility of creating volumes using command line on Windows. It also adds some features and fixes some issues.

As usual, a MacOSX version is available in the Downloads section or by clicking on the following link. It supports MacOSX 10.6 and above and it requires OSXFUSE 2.3 and later(https://osxfuse.github.io/).MacFUSE compatibility layer must checked during OSXFUSE installation.
Also a Linux version is available in the Downloads section or by clicking on the following link. The package contains the installation scripts for 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and for GUI and console-only version (choose which script is adapted the best to your machine).

All released files are signed with a PGP key available on the following link :https://www.idrix.fr/VeraCrypt/VeraCrypt_PGP_public_key.asc . It's also available on major key servers with ID=0x54DDD393.
Please check that its fingerprint is 993B7D7E8E413809828F0F29EB559C7C54DDD393.

SHA256 and SHA512 sums for all released files are available in the Downloads section.

Is possibile to implement a "maintenance reboot" function to allow rebooting without insert boot password?
It's essential for remote machines.
Comments: There is no way to load the encryption key or the password/PIM combo since all information will be removed from memory during a reboot. I do not think it is technically possible.

It's essential for remote machines.
Comments: since the restart is initiated manually by us, even by re-inserting the password via veracrypt tray if necessary, the code can be writed on filesystem in this case.

@Enigma2Illusion: like other projects, the Warrant Canary will only be published at a single address, the one at idrix.fr. Any problem with this?

@Thinking_Monkey: Thank you for sharing your insights and for your kind words. There is a risk indeed for things to get worse but let's hope that freedom and democracy will prevail.

Hello Mounir,

I did not notice that the Warrant Canary on CodePlex was an external link to idrix.fr website so I just assumed that the Warrant Canary was going to be mirrored to the other sites for VeraCrypt.

Kind Regards.

New Post: Curious error: MMP:11

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Like I suspected, it did have to do with a BIOS setting.

The BIOS of my lappy contains a setting 'Intel Rapid Start Technology' which has something to do with faster resuming after the computer has been put to sleep.
This setting can either be enabled or disabled. But when it is enabled, the VeraCrypt boot loader simply doesn't work and the result is the error MMP:11 (I still have no idea what it stands for).

I don't know if this is anywhere in the VeraCrypt documentation, but if it is I never noticed.
And if it isn't, maybe it can be added ... it might save some people lots of time and frustration in future :-)

Thanks for the suggestions, they were much appreciated.

I want to encrypt my system disk, but I am afraid I won't be able to log into it because of VeraCrypt not staring.

It's essential for remote machines.
Comments: How would you be able to retrieve the encryption key with the system drive encrypted without the bootloader password& PIM? Writing to the system drive will not allow you to retrieve the encryption key on reboot since the drive is encrypted and requires password/PIM to retrieve the encryption key. Entering the password using the VeraCrypt tray will not survive the reboot when the memory is wiped.

I've just downloaded and extracted (rather than installed) VeraCrypt 1.16 in order to generate a 64-bit traveler disk (TrueCrypt produces a 32-bit traveler disk executable which doesn't work with a 64-bit PE boot disk environment).

However, on running VeraCrypt and using Tools->Traveler Disk Setup, selecting the boot USB root, unchecking both Includes and clicking Create, I get the following error message:

```
The system cannot find the file specified.
Source: TravelerDlgProc:4053
```

VeraCrypt creates the empty folder VeraCrypt in the boot USB root and nothing else.
