Commented Unassigned: Can not mount the Volume [322]

Hi all;

With no apparent reason, my drive can not be mounted on any OS (Linux, Windows, MAC OS).
I'm sure about the password, and I already tried on different machines.

Someone with a hint?
Comments: What platform did you create the volume? Windows, Mac or Linux? Is the volume a file container or disk drive/partition? Did you try mounting using the option of embedded backup header if available option?

I have a major problem...

I have ubuntu linux 14.04 LTS and just installed VeraCrypt 1.6 (without official documentation, BTW- the GUI wouldn't even work), and VeraCrypt wouldn't start at all. When I clicked on the icon from the previous installation, the icon flashed, but didn't do anything else- it wouldn't start. Is anyone else having this problem, and, more importantly, does anyone else know how to solve this problem? Please help!

While reinstalling W10 on my SSD my storage HDD which was entirely encrypted with veracrypt (not just a container) apparently got wiped / formatted.

Does anyone have any idea how I can retreive all files? can I just use a regular data recovery program?

Any help would be much appreciated

Commented Unassigned: Long delay in mounting volume before password prompt [268]

When I try to mount a volume in the VeraCrypt UI it first pops up the "Please wait... This process may take a long time dialog" before asking me for the password. I assume it's trying to mount the volume using a cached password. I know this is inherited from TrueCrypt, but in TrueCrypt there was no noticeable delay. In VeraCrypt the delay is very noticeable and very annoying. Can it show the mount dialog immediately and then only try cached passwords if the user clicks OK, leaving the password field blank? I think the annoyance of having to click an extra button would be much less than the annoyance of this delay.
Comments: It just occurred to me that caching the hash has no benefit since each volume's hash is unique if you use the same password, keyfile(s) and/or PIM.

Are you able to mount the HDD encrypted volume in VeraCrypt?

If no, have you tried mounting using the option button to enable mount using embedded backup header?

New Post: encryption and RAID 5

I have a semi-unique situation, but I haven't had any luck finding an answer so far, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I have an LSI RAID card, and six 3TB hard drives hooked up in RAID 5. I encrypted the hard drives with TrueCrypt as a whole device (created the RAID, encrypted as hidden, and then formatted it as a whole). The LSI RAID card lets me add new hard drives to existing RAIDs and it builds them into the RAID. It takes a few days, but will disperse all the contents of the hard drive over the new RAID while doing it. My question is, can I do this with an encrypted volume or does it redistributing the stuff wreck the encryption and then make it unlockable and lost? If it can be distributed, then should I convert from TrueCrypt to VeraCrypt before or after I add to the RAID? Also, I just thought, do I need to decrypt the RAID before adding another hard drive, or do it while encrypted?

Comments: Oh, right, that makes sense! Never mind the hash then. The original issue remains, of course.

I just used the "restore volume header" function and I am now able to mount the volume.

However when I try to open this volume it just says "You need to format the disk in drive K: before you can use it. Do you want to format it" When I cancel this it says "K: is not accesible. The volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted"

so I can still not access my files.

Thanks for your help so far.

I found this in the FAQs. As close to an answer as I could find. I'd still like it if someone could verify it before I risk loosing all that stuff.

Is it possible to change the file system of an encrypted volume?

Yes, when mounted, VeraCrypt volumes can be formatted as FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, or any other file system. VeraCrypt volumes behave as standard disk devices so you can right-click the device icon (for example in the 'Computer' or 'My Computer' list) and select 'Format'. The actual volume contents will be lost. However, the whole volume will remain encrypted. If you format a VeraCrypt-encrypted partition when the VeraCrypt volume that the partition hosts is not mounted, then the volume will be destroyed, and the partition will not be encrypted anymore (it will be empty).

Comments: Never mind... got it. Saw installation on YouTube (granted, it was 1.-of-2v) and used Terminal to transfer the filename, removed the attendant single quotes, and hit enter. Quick tip- click on the lower left button on the GUI window... you know, the one that says, in effect, accept terms and continue? I, um, didn't and couldn't get the program to start. After I installed it correctly, it seemed to work fine. Nice... no more locking up when I've tried to Dismount All. All you have to do now is put in a Traveler Disk Setup feature in the Linux version....

Commented Unassigned: System favorite volume is sometimes not automatically moutned [317]

I use full system encryption and additionally a system favorite volume with the setting "mount system favorite volumes when Windows starts".
This usually works as expected but in around 1 out of 5 computer startups the favorite volume will not be mounted when I login.
This is a strange issue but I really do not have more information. I will be happy to provide logs or other information if someone tells me where to find them.
The 1 out of 5 is my personal approximation. It seems random to me, I do not notice me doing anything different when this happens.

I am on Windows 10 professional 64 bit using Vera Crypt 1.16.
Comments: I looked at every event I could find from the time spawn where it happened just now and didnt see anything related. Can I enable Vera Crypt to log more information or something like that?

Hi,

it would be nice if it were possible to hold backspace to erase the whole input. So if i notice i mistyped pw/pim before pressing enter i can delete the input with one key press (hold backspace) instead of pressing backspace x times to delete the input.

My keyboard would love you for that feature :)

New Post: Mounting 2 Volumes with the same Password

I usually mount 2 different volumes but which have the same password.
Both are Favorite Volumes
When mounting Favorite Volumes, in Truecrypt, I used to enter the Password once and then both favorite volumes opened.
In Veracrypt, I am requested to enter the Password twice: every time for each one of the 2 volumes
Is there a way around this?

In the VeraCrypt main GUI, click on the Settings > Preferences

At the bottom of the Preferences in the Password Cache section, enable "Temporary Cache password during Mount Favorite Volumes operations".
