I don't feel very cosy downloading nightly builds from sourceforge, because it does not use https. Is it possible to mirror beta builds on https server such as codeplex?

Secondly I wanted to have an update on the status of audit? Is it happening somewhere near future or we are not there yet? Money issues?
I would say that we are not there yet for the reasons I previously identified (I've updated all the vote totals below):
~~~~~
Mounir, I'd suggest delaying the audit past July. Looking at the "Issues" and sorting them by descending number of votes, we have:
41 votes - Header deletion and/or panic button
41 votes - GPT System Partition Encryption
23 votes - 64-bit Bootloader
19 votes - UniCode 8.0 Basis for VeraCrypt
17 votes - Support UEFI boot mode
17 votes - Rewrite the bootloader (32-bit)
12 votes - The ceiling of 64 characters - break it!
Several of these are big, important changes that would really remove the ability to rely on any prior audit.
Let's not spend big, big money on an audit just yet. Any gargantuan changes should be fully digested before we even think about spending that much money!
Created Unassigned: Progress indicator for random mouse movement [369]
This issue tracks this proposed improvement: https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/discussions/650238
~~~~~
"Move your mouse as randomly as possible within this window. The longer you move it, the better."

Evidently, user can't keep moving mouse forever. He must stop at some moment. So, user needs to decide how many seconds/minutes is enough. If you don't tell him he is forced to decide himself. But user's decision will be a pure guess, while you can program VeraCrypt to determine when it received enough random data. I would do it this way:

1. I would draw progress bar that would show how many random bits the program already received
2. The progress moves as user moves the mouse
3. When progress is less than 256 bits the bar is red
4. When it is between 256 and 1024 the bar is yellow
5. Above 1024 the bar is green (there is reserve - we need 256 and received 1024)

I am also missing this feature very badly.
In Bitlocker this is very simple to do so.
I have so many sdcards, usbsticks,they all get mounted as a own directory within c:\Mounts).
Really, I do not have so many drive-letters available!
These devices get mounted with "Bitlocker ToGo" and BitLocker offers a "Auto-unlock" specific for my laptop.
Very user-friendly desgin.
Please consider this feature, thanks you very much.

Good afternoon.
My name is CJ, and I'm in a bad situation. I have 3 VERY IMPORTANT documents;
I backed up (via system image) my HP pavilion pc-intel(R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 720 @ 1.60 GHz 160 GHz-8GB ram 64 bit os- "Product ID: 00426-OEM-8992662-0040", to an external 1.0 TB "Toshiba-Canvio connect II" portable drive.
Prior to the back up, I noticed 3 "Win RAR zip" folders W/ the descriptions in green. Unaware that this meant they where encrypted. I ran restore. I didn't encrypt them myself, however I'm aware that win rar folders have encryption tools, so it is possible it was accidental. Now that my system is restored, I cannot access them at all. I have tried everything from peazip to attempting ownership. NO luck.
Normally this wouldn't be a serious issue, however the three files include "legal" approx. 30 gig's of a case work I've been working on that is set for trial on march 3rd!
The second is a "time capsule" approx 40 gig's of mostly png, jpeg, bit map, files that I have been compiling since my brother and I where children, including irreplaceable photo's of myself, my brother, and our deceased father, moreover it is an essential element in my brothers wedding in April. Finally, however unimportant this may appear, is my "music" folder. 4,354 songs totaling an expense in excess of around 10k!
I have been trying to gain access myself for 2 weeks with no avail. Which brings me crawling on my knees to you. I'm afraid that if i continue attempting to gain access myself, alongside with pathetic, useless U-tube videos, and chat rooms where people are more concerned with feeling professional, than delivering results, I will have gone past the point of return. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION! Three people will be seriously affected if I fail.
I need a professional decryption expert. If you can help, direct me to someone who can, or walk me through this, compensation will be in order!
Thank you,
CJ

New Post: Veracrypt drive turned into ntfs

I was installing windows to a new drive that I got. When I was installing it I picked to install it to the new drive. After I installed all of the drivers etc I tried to mount my drive. It said that it was part of the system and that I shouldnt mount it. I looked and it was considered an active and primary drive. There was no data on the drive however so I am not sure why it affected my drive. All of the data for windows etc is on my new drive. When i dismounted it and tried to remount it, it now says that it is not a veracrypt drive. Is there a way to get the data back on it?

Can you use a newer portable version inside a older version in a FDE system to encrypt a new volume or container and take the advantages of any new features that comes with the newer version? Will it be any issues with the version that already is installed?

I have encrypted a whole drive/device in one partition on a drive with no OS - only documents (but EXTREMELY important ones).
It is not completly clear if you 1. had encrypted the whole device (without partitions), or 2. you had drive with one big partition and that encrypted? That's different.

In case 1.
you don't need to rebuild MBR - in password prompt press mount options and check use backup header, then type your password (and PIM, if you had it)

In case 2.
If you had only one partition covering all the disk space, just run diskmgmt.msc and create the new simple volume same as you did when you had the drive new, but do not assign letter and do not format the volume. How to: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-createdelete-a-partition-in-windows-7/
Now as in the first case - in password prompt press mount options and check use backup header, then type your password (and PIM, if you had it)
The key to success is to create the same partition of the same size and then use the backup header in mount options. The first header is gone 100% sure, but backup header is at the end (of partition or device) and it should still be there.

I was planning on removing the drive letter from the original partition and free it for the mounted volume to use. But since it's a VeraCrypt warning written in all CAPS, I figure I'd come up here and ask more experienced users (and possibly developers) first.
You understand it correctly. Free the letter in diskmgmt.msc first and then you can use this (freed) drive letter in veracrypt.

It could be useful, but requires a lot of work on veracrypt code I think. But you can use your network drives as mount points to free some letter for veracrypt. Once mounted, you can use mount point to veracrypt letter is you love mount points so much ;-)

@Alex512 Let me do the math for you.

Assume we have 10Gb (gibibyte) container file holding 1Gb VeraCrypt volume (let's make adversary's life simpler and assume they already know the volume's size and PIM value which, in real life, would not be so).

The above trivial example makes it obvious that adversary will have to check up to 9,663,676,416 more combinations to find the actual volume and access data.

Now please repeat again about additional security. Let me also tell you that we do not talk about average person who cannot even create strong enough password, let alone remember non-standard PIM counter and, possibly, additional offset:length pair.

If person is concerned about security, remembering two additional numbers doesn't make their life much harder.

Conclusion. The proposal is easy to implement and it 8does* bring much more security and options for plausible deniability. I suppose there will be interested parties to fork the VeraCrypt and implement the feature, if original developer(s) are not interested. No problem with that.

Windows 7 Enterprise, VeraCrypt 1.16, 64 bit

I mount two type "Normal" volumes using Mount Favorite Volumes with one password for both and the temporarily cache PW setting.

USB stick is drive W. Mounted drives show, as desired, as R: and Z:

Looking at Windows Explorer, everything looks correct (only R: and Z: show, in addition to my physical drives).

Dismount and R: and Z: disappear.
Eject and E: and F: appear <--- I never saw this with TrueCrypt.

Those phantom E and F drives don't actually exist and cause Windows to report that the Recycle Bin for those drives is corrupt (even after a reboot makes them disappear.

Once I was investigating I found that with my volumes mounted I could open a command prompt and go to the E and F drives, even though they didn't show in Explorer, and they were actually the same as my mounted R and Z drives.

Is there a fix for this?

Thank you!
