No.
one way: It is possible to execute EFI\VeraCrypt\DcsBoot.efi from grub to enter password and boot windows.(via grub chainloader )
another: Execute grub from DcsBoot if password is wrong or not entered. See "Actions" in DcsProp configuration. details DcsProp

Hello Mounir,

For tracking purposes, I have created this ticket for feature request of MSI Installer deployments for VeraCrypt.

Kind Regards.
Comments: i like the idea but i miss on this feature to install with own settings and not default settings. if deploy than with option that every enterprise,... want. that would be easy with more parameters or as example per parameter with a own settings file like /setting :"...\$settingfile from veracrypt portable mode" admins can use veracrypt portable mode to change settings and automated saved to the file and deploy it with not own and not standard settings.

I'm using VeraCrypt 1.19 on Windows 7 and 8.1. I have no option "Analyze a System Crash VeraCrypt" in the help menu or any other menu. Where can I find it?

I have encrypted my Windows 10 Home system partition on my laptop using VeraCrypt. Microsoft wants too much (~$100) just so I can have a feature that any laptop should have to have from the get go. Anyways After encrypting and finding I can boot into Windows if i push F9 at boot and select the EFI file that is in \EFI\VeraCrypt\DcsBoot.efi VeraCrypt asks for the password after I do it boots into Windows 10. If I don't push F9 it will boot into the HP automated repair system. I have tried changing the bootloader configuration using bcdedit but it doesn't work either. VeraCrypt has suggested installing their custom secure boot keys but I am unable to do so because I do not know how on this particular model. Can someone please help with some solution?

New Post: Restoring Header / Copying Header Manually for partially overwritten volume

I have several Veracrypt volumes that are all copies of an original volume, but inside each volume I have changed the files. So all my veracrypt volumes have the same encryption, password, salt, etc., just the content is different.

I accidently deleted one volume and partially overwrote it, but managed to recover it using TestDisk.
The recovered file is the same size as the original, but because it is partially overwritten I cannot mount it in Veracypt. I assume this is because the headers are corrupted.

I made a back up header using one of the copies and tried to use Restore Volume Header on the restored file. This doesnt work. I assume because a different salt is used,

I have 2 questions:

1) Is there a way to back-up and restore a volume header without changing the salt?

2) Could it work if I use 'dd' in Linux to copy the header from the original file to the restored copy? If so, any idea of the block size I need to use?

Any help would be appreciated!

1 - salt place is start of header (it does not affect restore/backup)
2 - dd is possible.

Main header sector - 0 ordinary, 128 hidden
Backup header - end of volume minus 255 is ordinary, end of volume minus 127 is hidden

To bruteforce sectors tool is DcsFV (better from entire DCS package)

mmh, may be I'm out for an encryption overkill?
The Surface pro 4 is mainly used for travelling. For that I had a small notebook with TrueCrypt (which died) and I always copied documents forwards and backwards. Now I can use Office 365 with OneDrive in combination with my notebook, my PC and my smartphone.
Does it make sense at all to switch off bitlocker and install veracrypt to encrypt my whole notebook (system disk), e.g. to prevent theft, and to use boxcryptor to encrypt the contents of OneDrive to keep my data confidental in the cloud.
Is that encrypption overkill, am I paranoid ?
Any comment would be very appreciated.

Commented Unassigned: My volumes are being mounted without entering a password! [645]

I'm not sure what exactly is going on but my Veracrypt volumes have now mounted two separate times after booting my machine without me entering any password. I am using this script to mount the volumes:
VeraCrypt.exe /cache /auto favorites /wipecache /quit

I am not using a system encryption and both times it was a cold boot, not a reboot or wake up from standby.

Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? Is this normal behaviour?

New Post: Windows Update seems to use Hybrid Shutdown and leave Veracrypt volumes mounted?

$

I strongly believe that Windows Update uses the Hybrid Shutdown / Fast Startup when running Windows Update, even though Fast Startup is disabled. This would cause VeraCrypt volumes to 'remain' mounted on every Windows Update.
If my suspicion is true, it would be a bug in Windows Update IMHO. But I am still raising it here, because I hope I can prevent it with VeraCrypt-settings -- and I think it is good if VeraCrypt is aware of it. (And I hope someone else is technically savvy enough to confirm or deny it?)

Prevention
Is there a way to prevent this?
  • my preference would be to disable Windows Update using the Hybrid Shutdown, but could not find a way yet. Does anybody know?
  • my hope is that the VeraCrypt-preferences for Auto-Dismount when "Entering power saving mode" would work for this case. Does anybody know?
    (Do these VeraCrypt-preferences also apply to "Sleep", because I wouldn't want that?)
  • Would it work to turn off all hibernation(?), e.g. using "powercfg.exe /hibernate off"?
TLDR:

Suspicion
  • I noticed my VeraCrypt volumes were sometimes mounted on Startup, rarely however, so I never managed to find a pattern, and did not feel the urge.
    This week I realized it happened after a reboot caused by Windows Update, but I can't remember if this was the case before.
  • I have searched the internet, and could hardly find any indications or evidence for my believe (yet), except for [this]
    (https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/4x7n41/psa_disable_fast_startup_to_force_windows_to_load/), assuming "AU" = Windows 10 Anniversary Update:
On my desktop, which has no Fast Startup, after I installed the AU using "update and Restart" every 3D game fails to load. Only after I completely shutdown the PC, and had a cold start is when my graphics driver is responsive again.
Over all, Fast Startup is buggy and should be disable regardless.
  • It might be the case here, but that's _very_speculative
  • I wonder if one might be able to reproduce it by removing an update and trying again?
    However, I myself am very reluctant to 'play around' with my OS, on my 'production' PC.
More

The VeraCrypt-FAQ contains this:
Do I have to dismount VeraCrypt volumes before shutting down or restarting Windows?
No. VeraCrypt automatically dismounts all mounted VeraCrypt volumes on system shutdown/restart.
I think would be nice if the answer would refer to the hybrid shutdown, as mentioned in the Limitations-page.

As mentioned in this issue, I think it would be nice for VeraCrypt to check the Fast-Startup-setting (on installation, and/or when creating an encrypted volume).

Edited Unassigned: Pretest fails - "Wrong Password/PIM/Hash" SOLVED! [687]

Hello everyone,

I tried System Encryption with VC 1.19, 1.18a and 1.20 beta on Windows 10 Pro 64bit, but it says "Wrong Password/PIM/Hash".
I tried with:
-Boot Option UEFI (only "Enter Password:" is displayed)
-several different encryption algorithms,
-secure boot disabled and enabled,
-different settings for bootloader priority (windows bootloader first or VC Bootloader first),
-external harddrives / USB-Sticks disconnected as this seems to cause problems sometimes,
-Caps and Numlock are in the same state as when I entered the PW during setup.
-XHCI on/off

There is one additional, internal harddrive in the Computer, could this be the problem? Motherboard is the MSI Z170i Gaming Pro AC. I sucessfully encrypted an external harddrive with Windows to Go (W10 Pro 64bit) on it with the very same Computer and VC 1.19. No Problems.

I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance.
Picture of Disk Management attached.

SOLUTION:
VeraCrypt seems to have problems with the symbols "}" and "{". Those are placed on the buttons above the "enter"-button. But if you press shift and "[" / "]" VeraCrypt doesn't care about that and just takes it as a "[" or "]" which leads to the "wrong Password/PIM/Hash" error.

Question to the VC-Development:
Is this a specific problem with my Keyboard/Hardware Setup or is it a general problem?
And thanks for doing a great job and implementing the EFI-OS-Encryption!

Installed Vera Crypt on windows 10 Pro 64 bit on a Lenovo Yoga 260 - performed system Encryption Pretest - selected Yes to restart system - which actually shut down the system - turned system on - was not asked to enter the password that was setup for Vera Crypt - Logged on to system and Vera Crypt Volume Creation Wizard popped up - stating The VeraCrypt system encryption pretest failed. Do you want to try again? select yes or no ? I have tried both yes and no and get the same results??
Comments: Hey. Try System Encryption, on shutdown/restart go to BIOS immediately. Look for "Boot Priorities" or similar and see if you can change the bootloader order. Probably the VC Bootloader is after the windows bootloader in priority, thus he is not triggered on startup. If you change it, so that VeraCrypt Loader is first, then it should be working. Hope I could help you!

The direct mode option is also unavailable on mac.

This limitation could be mentioned in the documentation…

What is the practical/real difference between the two options in the "Area to Encrypt" window when encrypting a system? One is"encrypt Windows system partition" and the other is "encrypt the whole drive".

Do both come with pre-boot auth?

The following error occurs:

> Unexpected characters following option 'dismount'.

When running any commands that take a MOUNTED_VOLUME mount point path option like:

```
veracrypt --dismount=/media/drive_veracrypt/
```

The documentation shows that the = should be used, but if used it causes the error.

Leaving the = out allows it to work. Other options such as
```
--volume-properties[=MOUNTED_VOLUME]
```
are also affected.

The documentation should either be updated to not show the = or the code updated to allow parsing it.

The following does work:
```
veracrypt --dismount /media/drive_veracrypt/
```

New Post: File remains in 'Recent Files' in Win10

I've looked around the forums before posting this but I have noticed that when you mount a drive/folder in VeraCrypt and you open picture files then unmount the drive/folder, the name of the picture file etc. that you have just viewed says in the Recent Files section in Windows 10.

If you then try and open the file you get a very brief flash of the file contents followed by the message that it is no longer available. You have to remove it manually from Recent Files. Windows is caching the file regardless of what VeraCrypt does..!

I've tried using the Encryption function that comes with Kaspersky Total Security to compare and I have to say that the Kaspersky leaves no trace, sure the name of the file is in Recent Files but when you open it the message is that the file has been moved or deleted. As it should...

Is there a way around this does anyone know. No point in encryption when the cached file is still viewable albeit briefly....

Many thanks

Hi,
I have a with VeraCrypt encrypted portable HDD.
Worked fine for the first time,
but now mostly I can't get mount it.
I always get the message
"incorrect password,
inccorrect Volume PIM number,
incorrect PRF (hash)
No valid volume found"

BUT if I open an Truecrypt-Container via VeraCrypt-App first,
than it is no problem to open my VeraCrypt HDD.

In my case I switch back to TrueCrypt 7.1a.
Perhaps the VeraCrypt-App is to overloaded.
I will have some looks on it, my be it will be really stable in the future.
