The scenario is if the laptop gets stolen. But, yeah, I wouldn't trust the encryption of my 2003 copy of Microsoft Word very much.
its not the encryption of office 2003 that should concern you. IF you do it right, you can opt to encrypt the word file with RC4, which is not that bad..... however, Word is creating temp files in plaintext. I bet my 5 bucks that you have your VC password in plaintext saved on your HD right now, in more than one place :)

New Post: Encrypted USB partition working on Linux but hidden on Windows

Hi,
I created on my USB key a very small partition (50MB) totally encrypted from Linux and it works perfectly as you can see (sdb2 is the encrypted volume):

But when I try to start my partition under Windows, it's hidden:

Below you can see the volume properties of this partition.

I made something bad?
Thanks. :)

I have a SanDisk USB stick partitioned as shown below.

Image

When I try to create an encrypted volume using this second partition, VeraCrypt can't see it.

Image

According to the FAQ "How can I use VeraCrypt on a USB flash drive?", this should fall under option 2. While I understand that Windows can't use the extra partitions, according to that FAQ entry, VeraCrypt should be able to.

I've been looking all over the documentation, existing issues, forum posts, etc. and have not been able to find a solution. How can I get VeraCrypt to acknowledge the extra partition?

Alex512 - Wow. I started using Word 2000 back in the year 2000 to save passwords - and have continued to follow this procedure into the present. Typically, I have one Word Doc for each password. I have these word documents on three computers and a NAS drive. Here's my IP address is ... =D Seriously though, everything from my mortgage, stocks, insurance, business, bank accounts and even bills are sitting in password protected Word files.

I'd like to see these plain text temp files. Where do you suppose they would be placed on a Windows 7 Machine?

_owl - Yes, I'm definitely in the average user category with dozens and dozens of passwords. 20 years ago I'd rubber stamp passwords for convenience - but over time realized that it's safer to use different passwords for each site. So, that eventually lead to the use of password protected Word Document to store passwords. From there it become convenient to copy & past credentials. It started a long time ago and now that has become legacy. For the moment I employed VeraCrypt to encrypt these Word Document files along with years worth of jpg scans of bills and other personal documents which aren't password protected at all. =P

I'm definitely open to using a better technology to strike a practical & modern balance between convenience & security - favoring security. Although - I'm never planning for the NSA to spend millions decrypting my hard drives LOL.

I would like my old laptop encrypted. A few years ago my house got broken into - I feel that a laptop would be an attractive score for a would-be thief and for that scenario I would definitely want the hard drive of my old laptop encrypted (already done BTW). Also, because this is my old laptop it is more likely to be left out in the open when I leave the house and therefore at higher risk of being stolen. I believe my new laptop (an Apple laptop) is already encrypted - but I'll have to look into that as well.

So, thanks for dropping a few new ideas my way (password manager software or possibly hardware). I'm actually not familiar with any of that stuff - yet.

We experienced the boot issue with 1.17 (after an incorrect password and pim combination entering the correct ones the machine fails to boot) on a Lenovo G50-80 notebook, but when we wanted to test the issue on more machines it was already fixed by commit d2ecbd3949c9, so 1.18 BETA 2 solved the issue for us. Thank you for the quick fix!

I have answered your post on Github. Here is a quote:
VeraCrypt can not use a partition on a removable drive if it is blocked from normal I/O by Windows at the driver level. This is what's happening in your case.

On XP days, there were technical solutions to enable applications to access extra partitions on USB sticks but these don't work anymore on Windows 7/8/10. Thus, the FAQ text should probably be rewritten to avoid any misunderstanding.

Anyway, to see if the extra partition is usable or not, you can use an application I developed called ConcealDrive: it displays a device list dialog similar to VeraCrypt one but implemented differently and it should show your extra partition alongside its path in Windows.
If this path ends with a digit, then it should work but if it ends with ?? then it means that Windows blocks I/O operations on this partition and VeraCrypt in this case can not bypass it.

Version 1.1 of ConcealDrive is available at https://github.com/veracrypt/ConcealDrive/releases/tag/ConcealDrive_1.1.

Hi Michael,

Sorry for not coming back on this earlier.
I don't have access to Redhat portal so I can't read the details of the issue and solution. Your message seems to indicate that the simple change to 2.6.31 in the check should solve the issue but a test in our side is needed to confirm this. An important aspect seems to be the check of the version of dm-crypt on the machine since you indicate that 1.7.0 is a minimum.
Do you happen to know how we can retrieve dm-crypt version?

Not sure HOW this happened I had to differ to do a reboot had done this twice already since it was a good size drive I am encrypting. The issue is that this time when I try to continue it's giving me several dif messages. Telling me either a bad PIM incorrect Drive or wrong password. To which I know it's none of the above. Can anyone please tell me IF you have seen this issue and if so how you were able to resolve it.

Another question I have is WHERE exactly does veracrypt save the Encryption Data when it begins an encryption. It must log it somewhere so that it knows what % etc it was at in the previous process..

If my understanding is correct, you were able to resume the encryption twice but the third time VeraCrypt could not resume the encryption.
Since you are sure that you are using the correct password and you are selecting the correct partition (through the selection dialog), then the only explanation is that your drive was modified somehow or it is not working properly.
A small test that you can do to check this is to try to mount the partition using VeraCrypt and in the mount options dialog, check the option to use the embedded backup header as indicated in the screenshot below. What error message do you receive when you do this?

Concerning the encryption state, it is saved in the disk directly and not in an external file. This way, you an resume the encryption operation in another machine.

Just built a NOGUI veracrypt_1.16_Source.tar.bz2 on fedora22 linux, and no power on earth seems to be able to get the --stdin option to work for reading passwords:

```
zooty> sudo veracrypt --non-interactive --protect-hidden=no --pim=0 --hash=sha512 --keyfiles=/huge/secure.keyfile --stdin /huge/secure.hc /secure < passfile
Error: Operation failed due to one or more of the following:
- Incorrect keyfile(s).
- Incorrect password.
- Incorrect Volume PIM number.
- Incorrect PRF (hash).
- Not a valid volume.
```

However, if I use the interactive version, it seems to work fine:

```
zooty> sudo veracrypt --protect-hidden=no --pim=0 --hash=sha512 --keyfiles=/huge/secure.keyfile /huge/secure.hc /secure < passfile
Enter password for /huge/secure.hc:
```

It prints the prompt, but also reads the exact same password file from stdin and mounts the secure filesystem correctly.

idrassi,
TY so much, that is what I figured it now tells me the same thing bad PIM, PW and or bad HASH or Volume.. Same as before.. Just wanted to let you know.. TY
It shows a Resume error :338 it's also kind of strange when I attempted to resume the other day, BTW got stressed so left it alone for several days before I through the dang thing.. LOL If people ONLY knew how stressful our job is..

But when I attempted to continue the Encryption it comes to the end then tells me NO valid NTFS, I sincerely appreciate the help I HATE asking for help ever BUT this one is Imperative...

idrassi TY so much again,

hi,

ı working on macbook and ubuntu. i can't see mount selected volume upon logon.
where is it?

thanks
Comments: For Linux, a manual solution would be to add specific command on ~/.profile to make VeraCrypt mount volumes upon logon. I have done a video that shows an example of such solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iTgAWjuKPE

Mounir,
it would be great if __Veracrypt Format__ prompted for a password when that parameter was omitted in the __command line__. This would make volume creation as secure as volume mounting, wouldn't it? As it stands right now, creating a volume from the command line leaves _clear text_ passwords in the command history.

Thank You!

New Post: EFS issue with NTFS volumes

I copied a EFS file from an unencrypted drive into a NTFS veracrypt volume and I noticed that the file is completely messed up inside the veracrypt volume. Just turning on EFS for a file in a NTFS veracrypt volume is enough to mess up the file. I can't turn off EFS for the file or even open or copy the file, I keep getting a "incorrect function" error. The only thing I can do is delete the file. However it works fine if the veracrypt volume is formatted as FAT. From what I've read, Windows 10 uses Enterprise Data Protection to keep files encrypted on FAT volumes.

This is happening with Veracrypt 1.17 on Windows 10 Pro.

Hello mantr,

You are welcome. I suggest you might take a look at KeePassX password managing software (www.keepassx.org). It's open source and you can use it across your platforms - Win, Mac, Linux and actually iOS too (with MiniKeepass App). I'm not sure about Android. PasswordSafe is a credible option too.

BTW, your Apple laptop is not encrypted by factory default. You need to explicitly enable FileVault2 full-disk encryption, System Prefs->Security&Privacy->FileVault. It's a must, I'd suggest.

Cheers!
