I am having the same issue.

VeraCrypt 1.17
Linux Mint 17.2 64bit
Toshiba Ext. USB3 DWC250 (does that funky controler MBR fake out thing.)

Formated for ext4:
Disk /dev/sdb: 5001.0 GB, 5000981073920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 608001 cylinders, total 9767541160 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes

I can create a standard partition volume just fine if the drive is partitioned.
If I try to create a hidden partition it will not even let me create the outer partition. I get the 2TB error.
I tried creating a standard partion then going back and choosing a hidden one but it does not give me the "direct mode" option.

GPT System Partitions cannot be encrypted because the bootloader does not support GPT Partition Table
Comments: Oh my goodness! I had thought this issue was dead. I am amazingly pleased to be proven wrong. Good job team VeraCrypt, and thank you for keeping true to your promise to provide updates idrassi!

Due to other reasons outside of VeraCrypt I have several, external, encrypted drives resp. containers which are or must be mounted as drives S: and T:

Whenever I start now VeraCrypt I have manually to scroll down in drive letter assignment list to get to drives S: and T:
This is on the long run unconvenient for permanent usage,

Can there be an option included in next VeraCrypt version to either

a) make main window resizeable (and rememeber size and position)
or
b.) let VeraCrypt remember the top-most drive letter at last exit and auto-restore this list position at next start?

Thank you
Peter

no, there's no direct dependence. the crash happens under different scenarios too.

Hello,

I want to encrypt my system drive (i'm on Windows 7) but I sometimes use Tails (on USB). Is the system encryption of Windows 7 compatible with a use of Tails on USB ? I use Legacy boot.

Thanks !

Merci !

Thank you for this report.

It would be helpful to get OSX stack trace and for that you need to validate the error window. Can you please post the information displayed there?

If it doesn't contain any helpful information, I will build a debug friendly version of VeraCrypt that can give us more information about the location of the crash.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

Since you start Tails by booting on an external USB drive, there is no compatibility issue with the encryption of Windows system drive: Tails will be able run but you can not access Windows partition unless you use VeraCrypt to mount it in Tails (VeraCrypt Linux binary can run on Tails).

.......................................................................................................................

Bonsoir,

Hi,

This issue is linked to the fact that VeraCrypt forces the outer volume to be formatted using FAT32: this is the only format we know how to parse in order to get the available clusters bitmap which is needed to define the position and the size of the hidden volume inside the outer volumes.
Since FAT32 has a 2TB maximum size limit when the logical sector size is 512 bytes, VeraCrypt can not create an outer volume bigger than 2 TB on disks where the logical sector size if 512 byes.

Both of you are using disks that have a logical sector size of 512 bytes, this explains why VeraCrypt refuses to create an outer volume larger than 2 TB.

If you were using disks with a logical sector size set to 4096 bytes, VeraCrypt would have been able to an outer volume with a size up to 16 TB which the maximum size allowed by FAT32 for such 4K disks.

Actually, a similar issue has been already reported and analyzed on November/December 2014. It is still open and you can see my analysis at https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/workitem/18

As indicated in the link above, the ideal solution would be to implement cluster bitmap analysis for Ext3/Ext4 filesystems which is not something easy to do. Until then, FAT32 will be the only filesystem supported on Linux for hidden volumes and in order to have a size bigger than 2 TB, a disk with a logical sector size equal to 4096 must be used.

Of course, we can implement the possibility for users to manually select the size of the hidden volume but there is risk for data loss if the user enter wrong values and VeraCrypt can not check their validity. Is this something acceptable?

Rated 3 Stars (out of 5) - Pros: + intensive, open development of a TrueCrypt successor. Thanks, IDRIX! + user security obviously a top priority. Cons: - Focus on security comes at HUGE, arbitrary cost to user convenience, including: - boot PBKDF delay is entirely unacceptable, still requiring 50 seconds on my laptop as of v1.17. - too many hash choices lengthen auto-detect delay. - PIM system caters to hash geeks and those that complain about the above delays, but it should not be used for the latter as the real fix is to reduce the default PBKDF iteration counts. - Boot loader sometimes won't let me in, requiring a power cycle to "reset" it or something. TrueCrypt *never* did this to me and I used it for at least 5 years. This is scary! Summary: TrueCrypt's PBKDF was truly weak and deserved improvement, but VeraCrypt has taken things to a severe other extreme. No data system should cause more than 5 seconds of delay for more users in its default mode. Laptops will boot to Windows in <10sec., yet VC requires 50-70sec.? That's fine as an optional feature for paranoid users, but it's unacceptable as a default feature for all users, many of which may be less technical to begin with.

Rated 5 Stars (out of 5) - Overall, very impressed with VeraCrypt. I was quite disappointed when the original truecypt website went *poof* with some malarky about using Windows Bitlocker instead of Truecrypt. Waited for a quite a long time and looked at a lot of other programs that cost money and just didn't work. VeraCrypt is like TrueCrypt reborn, and it's better. Yes, the drives take a lot longer to mount than in Truecrypt, but it's worth the improved security imho. v1.16 was unstable on my system, but 1.17 works like a champ, osx 10.11x. It also has large hard drive support for Mac (which TrueCrypt did not) and that's a big deal. Also, it mounts Trucrypt volumes in "truecrypt" mode so you can't go wrong. Great job. Thank you Idrix!

Sure, I'll gladly help. But unfortunately I'm not quite familiar with OSX yet. So if you could give some detailed instructions how I can get this stack trace - it would accelerate things.

Thanks and cheers!

Hi. While encrypting an external hard disc I interrupted the process. The problem is that I had installed VeraCrypt on the same HD and currently can neither open the HD nor run VeraCrypt to finish the encryption process to the end. Could anyone help?

Comments: Hi. I'm pretty sure the process can be resumed using the 'Resume Interupted Process' selection on the Volumes submenu (http://puu.sh/noxwS.png). You will need to reinstall Veracrypt on another drive you can access however.

The Beginner's Tutorial appears to be outdated

I'm trying to set up VeraCrypt and this is what I do
1 Open it up > under volume > I Select File = J:\Add to flash\Stuff
2 Click > Mount > A New Window opens > Does the volume contain a hidden volume ?
I choose > The volume Does Not contain a hidden volume.
3 A New Window opens > Enter a Password for the normal/outer volume.
I enter ****** and Click OK .
4 That takes be back to the 1st Window And I Can Not go any where Else
If I click on Mount to goes back to A New Window opens > Does the volume contain a hidden volume ?
5 I never get anything like step 9 of the Beginner's Tutorial

Hello Rick,

Are you using the latest version of VeraCrypt which currently is 1.17 version?

It appears you did not follow the documentation correctly since your step 9 description does not match creating a file container. It appears you are attempting to mount a volume. First, you need to either encrypt a disk partition or create a file container.

https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Beginner%27s%20Tutorial

The documentation shows step-by-step how to create a file container and then how to mount the file container with red lined boxes to guide with what to click or perform. I suggest you create a small test file container to understand the process and how you would mount the file container.

Kind Regards.

Hello,
I'm trying to use command line and mount quitly but the key dialog shows.
veracrypt /v \Device\HardDisk1\Partition1 /l O /k myfile /a /q
(with truecrypt worked, mounted the partition without showing the dialog)

Any ideas ?

Thanks
