New Post: Still issues with System Favorites not mounted with Windows 10

First of all I have exact the same problems bevore with Truecrypt 7.1a and update to Veracrypt 1.17 because I read in the changelog that version 1.12 "Fix system favorites not always mounting after cold start." Unfortuantely the problem still exist in the 1.17:

I first install Veracrypt and encrypt the system partition in Windows 10 x64. Then I mount one or two encrypted partitions and define them as system favorites (drive letter d and e). Till this everything worked fine.
But then I plugged in an USB stick bevore booting windows and the stick gets the drive d and no system favorites are mounted. From this moment on it is impossible to get the system favorites back automatically mounted also when the USB stick is not conected on next windows start. I can delete them and define them new nothing gets back the initital working bevore USB stick was connected. They only worked again when Windows is not "cold" started but restarted! Bevore I plugged in the Usb stick the system favorites worked with "cold" and "hot" start of windows. With Truecrypt the behavour was the same. The only way to get the system favorites back fully working was to unencrypt the system partition und encrypt new like I did when changing from Truecrypt to Veracrypt.

I've made two screenshots from the actual system one with "cold" start not working and one with "hot" start working:

With Windows 7 and Truecrypt I have never had this problem..

I think, that malware after UAC admin prompt asked at the right time answered wrong can write wherever it wants, including the reserved partition. But it could be harder to detect it and even harder to get rid of it from there, because it is not visible ;)

I came to conclusion, that the reson for this extra partition is the recovery mode (so you do not need the install DVD). If ntfs table of the main partition becomes corrupted for some reason, this extra partition allows you to boot to recovery mode and fix the system. For me it's a wasted space, when I have the install dvd by hand. Moreover, if windows are corrupted, I prefer to reinstall than to repair.

I have an encrypted usb set for auto-mount. I plugged in a non-encrypted usb and wanted to do a quick format of it. I think I used the assigned host drive for my encrypted drive by accident. I am hard pressed to believe that windows was able to reformat my encrypted drive itself. (right?)

Now, when I plugin the encrypted drive in, Veracrypt recognizes it as an auto-mount and pops up the password screen. It shows the proper drive name on the header of the popup. When I enter the password however, it gives me the failure message that the 'host file is in use" ...

I've got no back up of the encrypted drive so I am teetering on the edge of panic.... any suggestions or help would be more than appreciated.

Comments: After you connect the external USB drive to your PC, can you use VeraCrypt to mount the volume using the option for the embedded backup header? In the VeraCrypt GUI, * Select the device and select one of the available drive letters showing in the VeraCrypt GUI. * Click mount button and enter your password. * Click Mount Options button and enable "Use backup header embedded in volume if available". * Click OK in the Mount Options screen. * Click OK in the Mount screen.

Comments: To clarify, using the embedded backup header, you are now able to mount in VeraCrypt the volume and see your files?

New Post: Maximum PIM value I can set

$

Actually, the PIM value is declared as signed init meaning the maximum positive number you can specify for the user input PIM value is 2147483647 and not 2147468.

https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/code/ci/444d5031624e5cf0844a4ed73c27125f4a2f5304/

If I am understanding the code correctly, this means an overflow condition can occur due to noIterations cannot hold the result of the calculations if VolumePim is set to or near the maximum positive 2147483647 value.

get_pkcs5_iteration_count is also defined as init which can lead to an overflow condition if PIM value plus calculations exceed 2147483647 value.

The code should specify an upper limit for the PIM calculations that prevents an overflow conditions.

Comments: I was able to mount the drive but NO, I don't see any files. It's very very empty. I have 2600 txt documents that I pulled from a deep scan. They aren't readable of course. I have files xxx.e1 - xxx.e15 as well as some event logs. All of these are on a new drive.

I have just created a non-system encrypted VeraCrypt volume. Because of past loss of data when using TrueCrypt I intend to keep a data backup in an alternative encrypted media. Should the VeraCrypt volume become unreadable due to file corruption please tell me what form of backup I should make to try to make the volume readable? I obviously cannot use a Rescue Disk.

Asymmetric (read:public key) encryption methods are based on mathematical problems already.
For instance, RSA/PKI is based on number factorization (determining dividers of numbers).
Unfortunately, that makes them slow as well. That's why most hashes and symmetric algorithms rely
more on bit shifts/shuffles.

Created Unassigned: Standard Container Error [430]

Issue: Password no longer works on container.

Veracrpyt Output:

"Operation failed due to one or more of the following:
-Incorrect Password
-Incorrect Volume PIM number
-Incorrect PRF (hash)
-Not a valid volume

Source: MountVolume:7336"

Outline:

I recently created a 50GB container on a new HDD and moved all contents from another container before deleting the old one. It was a standard volume using AES encryption/standard hashing. When mounting I use the default settings and an unused drive letter. The file extension used was .pdf. Additionally I recently upgraded to Windows 10 however I am almost certain it was working on the new OS. When I initially got this error I thought I might have actually forgotten my password but after spending 3 hours attempting every password/pattern I typically use I am thinking there may be another issue. Unfortunately I didn't back up my header which I am now realizing was a big no no on my part. My question is what other steps can I take to possibly recover this drive. Needless to say the container has some extremely valuable data on it.

Steps already taken:

-Reinstall Veracrypt
-Rolled back to Windows 7
-Every password/pattern ever used.
-Backup builtin header

For non-system encrypted volumes, I recommend making an external backup of the header. Click on Volume Tools button.

As always, have backups of your data due to hardware failure, software issues or user error can cause loss of access to the volume even when you are not using encryption. :-)

I used to use crypttab combined with a truecrypt home volume, which worked fine. Recently I have converted the truecrypt volume to a veracrypt volume and I haven't found a way to get it working with veracrypt yet.

Is it possible to use veracrypt and crypttab?
If so, how?

New Post: Can Mount But Can't See Files...

I went through the process of encrypting and mounting a new USB. I created a test folder and put 12 images inside the folder. I copied the folder into the USB. I dismounted and remounted and the folder is visible, however, when I open it the folder is empty.

To make this even more exciting, I am now getting a 'The system cannot find the path specified", "Source Mount 4462" error making it impossible to even mount the USB. When I was able to mount the USB, I could "check file system" and the 12 test images I put into the test folder and copied into the USB are there, the folder is just indicating that it is empty. Unfortunately now I cannot even get it to mount.

I'm unsure what has happened, however, if anyone can provide a bit of insight I would greatly appreciate the input.
