Created Unassigned: Odd Behavior [431]

I have been working with some large datasets (190,000 cases) which are encrypted in a VeraCrypt container. I am able to work with these in SPSS (Statistical Analysis for Social Sciences) on my MacBook Pro by simply decrypting the volume and opening the datasets. SPSS reads and writes directly to the mounted volume.

I have saved the container to an external hard drive, and on a PC running Windows 10, we can open the container and see the decrypted files, but every time we try to work on them with SPSS, we get a license error. If we remove the files from the container, and dismount the container, SPSS works like a charm on the decrypted files. But that adds several steps to the process (Mount volume, select files, copy to desktop, dismount volume, and reverse when we are done).

Any thoughts on what may be causing this strange behavior, and more importantly a solution?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

New Post: Add Option to Minimize To System Tray Option

Actually after using it a little bit more. I have realized that the X button really minimizes to the system tray as you say, but ONLY after the volume is MOUNTED, if for some reason the volume has not been mounted or if it was dismounted automatically the X will close completely the program.

Of course that is you choice, I just would like at least that the minimize button always put on the system tray, I mean look for a way to avoid to close the program involuntarily but at the same time have it a little bit hidden.

Thanks anyway for your great work.

Where is the changelog for this project? I can't find it anywhere, and I don't really feel like doing a diff on the sourcecode.

Comments: As __Enigma2Illusion__ points to; this is problem is with the SPSS software and not with _Veracrypt_.

It's not actually that obvious. From the program's About screen, we are led here:
https://www.idrix.fr/Root/
Then here:
https://www.idrix.fr/Root/content/section/7/46/
Then here:
https://www.idrix.fr/Root/content/section/7/46/ (seems to be the "homepage")
Then here:
https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Downloads

That last page has "HOME" selected, so I assumed that was the homepage at Codeplex I was looking at. I had no way of knowing that wasn't it, especially with the lack of navigation. So, here's my suggestions:
  • Put a link to the changelog on the Downloads page
  • Link to the Codeplex homepage from idrix.fr
  • Link to the Codeplex homepage from the program's About screen
  • Call the page "Release notes / Changelog" so a search for "changelog" will pick it up.
Thanks :)

I solved my problem!! I wish to share my experience for other users. Creating an undeleteable folder on a usb HD.

Step 1 Create an unallocated space with gparted (resizing HD). One can format it and label it too.
Step 2 Create an encrypted container in a hard drive as root and follow instructions.
when finished, make sure to change proprieties to user (not root)

Nobody can delete the folder except when in root.

There's no reason for minimize to tray, actaully I like it minimized on the askbar when I want to have it there minimized. When you want to "minimize" to tray, that's what X is for. Veracrypt exits only when you have ticked "Exit when there are no mounted volumes" in preferences ;) Otherwise it works as you would expect.

So you have encrypted the whole usb stick, or a file container and placed it on the stick? Windows or linux? In one sentence you are talking about encypting USB, in other you are remounting folder. So I guess you have encrypted whole stick and you are on linux. If you have encrypted the whole flash, you cannot mount it as usual, you will have to mount it using veracrypt to whatever mount point you have access to. I'd try to run veracrypt as root (su), on some distros I remeber I had problems with truecrypt when it was launched as normal user. Of course it could be bad flash too.

What does VeraCrypt bring to you?

VeraCrypt adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks.
VeraCrypt also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt. The following post describes some of the enhancements and corrections done:https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/discussions/569777#PostContent_1313325

As an example, when the system partition is encrypted, TrueCrypt uses PBKDF2-RIPEMD160 with 1000 iterations whereas in VeraCrypt we use327661. And for standard containers and other partitions, TrueCrypt uses at most 2000 iterations but VeraCrypt uses655331 for RIPEMD160 and 500000 iterations for SHA-2 and Whirlpool.

This enhanced security adds some delay only to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data.

Starting from version 1.12, it is possible to use custom iterations through the PIM feature, which can be used to increase the encryption security.

Starting from version 1.0f, VeraCrypt can load TrueCrypt volume. It also offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format.

UPDATE February 13th 2016 : VeraCrypt 1.17 has been released. It brings many enhancements and fixes like faster mount and boot (factor 2 speedup) and it adds support for Unicode passwords (all characters allowed now, like ö, Ä, é, or ß). Please check the release notes for the complete list of changes. Download for Windows is here.

As usual, a MacOSX version is available in the Downloads section or by clicking on the following link. It supports MacOSX 10.6 and above and it requires OSXFUSE 2.3 and later(https://osxfuse.github.io/).MacFUSE compatibility layer must checked during OSXFUSE installation.
Also a Linux version is available in the Downloads section or by clicking on the following link. The package contains the installation scripts for 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and for GUI and console-only version (choose which script is adapted the best to your machine).

All released files are signed with a PGP key available on the following link :https://www.idrix.fr/VeraCrypt/VeraCrypt_PGP_public_key.asc . It's also available on major key servers with ID=0x54DDD393.
Please check that its fingerprint is 993B7D7E8E413809828F0F29EB559C7C54DDD393.

SHA256 and SHA512 sums for all released files are available in the Downloads section.

I am afraid i can not suggest anything at that point. It must be some problem with the drive itself. Other users may be able to suggest something in this case. Enigma2iillusion?
The only thing i can now think of is that the drive needs to be initialized, which suggests it might be a hardware issue. It is quite possible that the USB port is lacking power. I would really urge everyone here to read this post and suggest a solution as this is a case where someone really needs help!

Created Unassigned: Mounting aborts when inserting USB drive [434]

A funny timing issue occurred to me the other day. Windows apparently keeps track of USB sticks/drives you have had connected to your machine, and the drive letter they were assigned. Now let's say you had a drive mounted to Z:. If you try to mount a VeraCrypt volume on Z: while that drive is not plugged in, and you plug it in while VeraCrypt is verifying the password, the drive gets Z: and the mount fails saying the letter is already in use. I don't know if this is necessarily a bug, or a problem people are very likely to run into, but I think it is worth noting.

Comments: By the way, sorry I forgot to mention this but the versions involved are Windows 10 (build 10586.164) and VeraCrypt 1.16, both 64-bit. (I checked and this issue does not seem to be mentioned in the release notes for 1.17.)
